Misplaced modifiers adalah kata, frase atau klausa tunggal yang tidak jelas kata apa yang dijelaskannya. Berikut ini kami akan memberikan 6 (enam tips untuk menempatkan Modifier dengan tepat.

• Limiting modifiers (only, even, almost, nearly, just) harus diletakkan di depan kata yang dijelaskannya.

1. Tidak Jelas: You will only need to plant one package of seeds.
2. Revisi: You will need to plant only one package of seeds. ("Only" menjelaskan "one," bukan "need.")

• Tempatkan frase dan klausa yang memberikan penjelasan dengan tepat sehingga pembaca akan mudah memahaminya.

1. Tidak Jelas: The robber was described as a tall man with a black mustache weighing 150 pounds.
2. Revisi: The robber was described as a six-foot-tall man weighing 150 pounds with a black mustache. ("150 pounds" menggambarkan "the man", bukam "the mustache")

• Susunlah kalimat dengan teratur, mulai dari Subjek hingga Objek.
  

1. Tidak Jelas: John, after trying to reach the ball, decided to get a ladder.
2. Revisi: After trying to reach the ball, John decided to get a ladder. (Subject dan verb terlalu panjang untuk dipisahkan.)

• Infinitives ("to" + verb, seperti "to go," "to catch," "to shout") biasanya tidak dipisah.

1. Tidak Jelas: The patient should try to, if possible, avoid going up and down stairs.
2. Revisi: If possible, the patient should try to avoid going up and down stairs.

• Susunlah Dangling modifiers dengan baik.

1. Tidak Jelas: Deciding to join the navy, the recruiter happily pumped Joe's hand. (The recruiter tidak memutuskan untuk bergabung dengan AL, melainkan si Joe.)
2. Revisi: The recruiter happily pumped Joe's hand after learning that Joe had decided to join the navy.

1. Tidak Jelas: Though only sixteen, UCLA accepted Martha's application. (UCLA tidak berusia 16 tahun, melainkan si Martha.)
2. Revisi: Though Martha was only sixteen, UCLA accepted her application.

• Dangling modifiers dapat diperbaiki dengan menyusun ulang suatu kalimat, namun caranya dapat saja berubah-ubah sesuai dengan keinginan penulis.

1. Tidak Jelas: When watching films, commercials are especially irritating.
2. Revisi: When watching films, I find commercials especially irritating. (atau) When I am watching films, commercials are especially irritating.
